French Riots…Labor Issue (Again)

Filed under: Articles of Interest, France, Uncategorized — Hännah @ 8:16 pm

When around three million protested the CPE (the new labor law in France allowing employers to fire their young employees more easily) yesterday, the world watched in wonder as nearly the whole city shut down–even the Eiffel tower. The workers left this major tourist attraction to join the protest.
Things got a little rowdy later on, and water cannon, tear gas, and arrests were used to tame the crowds.

But that’s not going to solve the major issue. AP quotes a Frenchman in an article: “We are here for our children. We are very worried about what will happen to them,” said Philippe Decrulle, an Air France flight attendant at the Paris protest. “My son is 23, and he has no job. That is normal in France.”
But the Prime Minister Villepin refuses to overturn the pending law, claiming that the law will create more jobs. He’s right–it will. But precious few, and nowhere near enough for this socialist country gone to the unions.
What they need is more capitalism, but the French people (at least those leading the country) refuse to admit it. The government must take care of its people, but they don’t see that the best way to care for their children is to let them grow up and out.
